WETH/USD price feed
WETH is ether restated in the token standard that smart contracts expect. The asset underneath is ETH itself, so its dollar rate is ether's rate read at the venues where contracts actually settle.

The quote leg of DeFi
Ether predates the ERC-20 standard, which means contracts cannot hold it the way they hold tokens. Wrapping solves that: deposit ETH, receive WETH, redeem whenever. The wrapper exists purely so that ether can move through the same plumbing as everything else.
That plumbing role made WETH the default quote leg across on-chain markets. Countless tokens discover their price against it first, then against dollars. When a pool quotes something in WETH, the dollar value of that quote depends on WETH's own market rate.
ML Data reads that rate in the venues where WETH trades against dollar assets, on Ethereum plus the L2s where activity has spread. This is the rate paid in live markets, not a redemption assumption.

Protocols quoting in WETH
Any market that denominates in WETH needs a dollar reading of the wrapper itself to express positions, fees, or collateral in dollar terms.
Accounting across L2s
Teams holding WETH on several networks need one market rate for the asset to consolidate books that settle in different places.
