USDC/USD price feed

USDC is the settlement dollar of on-chain markets: the asset other tokens are priced in, the collateral behind lending books, the quote leg of thousands of pools. Here the dollar itself is the thing being priced: hundreds of active pools across more than a dozen chains, resolved into the rate the market is paying.

Why a dollar-pegged asset needs a price feed

The quoted price of USDC is almost always the same: one dollar. That is the peg, not the price. On the venues where USDC actually changes hands, the rate moves inside a narrow band around the peg, a live record of small premiums plus small discounts for the on-chain dollar. Risk systems consume that band, because collateral liquidates at the traded rate, not at the round number.

The distinction stopped being academic in March 2023. With part of the reserve backing briefly stranded in a failed bank, USDC traded well below a dollar on public venues over a single weekend before recovering fully. Positions were liquidated at market rates throughout. A price feed exists for exactly that weekend: a continuous, computed market rate, so that credit books plus margin engines see the number participants are actually paying while it is moving.

None of this is a forecast about USDC. It is the reason the pair deserves a computed rate at all: the market re-prices the on-chain dollar continuously, in sizes large enough to matter, whether or not anyone is watching. This page is the watching, backed by a method that can be inspected.

Pricing the asset everything else is priced in

In most of DeFi, USDC is the measuring stick. Pools quote other assets in USDC; books settle in it; the pair name puts it second. Pricing the measuring stick itself means reading that relationship from the other side, across every market deep enough to count. The composition has run to dozens of distinct quote assets: the other dollar stablecoins, the volatile majors, euro tokens, newer yield-bearing dollars.

The heaviest legs have tended to be the obvious ones: USDC against USDT, one dollar against the other, the tightest spread in crypto, plus the Ether and Bitcoin pairs, the deepest volatile markets on-chain reading the dollar from their side. The rest scatters widely, dozens of small legs that each add an independent measurement, with the split among all of them recomputed as liquidity moves.

The families cross-check one another. A move that shows up in the USDT leg alone reads as noise in one market; a move that shows up across the stable, Ether plus Bitcoin legs at once reads as the dollar itself moving. Breadth is not decoration here. It is how a feed tells the difference.

Native on three ecosystems

USDC is issued natively on most of the chains where it trades, rather than bridged as a wrapped copy. A multichain composition therefore watches the same dollar clearing in different districts of the same economy, with no bridge standing between the venues plus the asset they price.

Ethereum, Base plus Solana have been the heavyweights of this composition, with the remainder spreading across a dozen further networks, each weighted for the dollar liquidity it actually holds rather than for its profile. Which of the three leads at a given reading is the snapshot's business, not the story's.

The mix is an observation, not an allocation. Nobody chose those shares; the pools did, by holding what they hold. If dollar activity migrates between ecosystems, the weights record it at the next computation.

Depth is the number that matters

For a functioning stablecoin the price is supposed to be uneventful. The number a risk desk actually interrogates is depth: how much could trade into the composition within one percent of the mid before the rate gives way. For USDC that figure stands in the hundreds of millions of dollars on each side of the book, published alongside the price itself.

Flow tells the same story. Billions of dollars clear through these pools in an ordinary week, so the rate is continuously tested by real size. Depth plus volume together are what turn a quoted price into an executable one; a rate means something at the size that can actually trade at it, which is why this feed reports both rather than the price alone.

That depth is spread, not pooled. It sits across many venues on many chains, so the rate a credit book reads is the blended judgment of the whole on-chain dollar market rather than the order book of any single venue. For the asset everything else settles in, that spread is the property worth paying attention to.

Who runs on this rate

Credit markets

USDC is both the collateral plus the debt asset across on-chain lending; liquidation logic keyed to a live market band prices the risk that actually exists.

Perpetuals plus margin

Margin posted in USDC is marked at market value; a computed rate with depth behind it prices that margin the way the market does.

Treasuries plus platforms

Balances held in USDC get marked plus reported; a rate with a public composition behind it gives every mark a source that can be inspected.
