POL/USD price feed

Polygon renamed its network asset from MATIC to POL and both names are still in circulation across the market. That sounds cosmetic. For anyone keeping a price series it is not, because a record that changes its label partway through stops being one continuous record.

One asset, two names

The asset is the Polygon Ecosystem Token. Public pages still print the former name beside the current one, so the same thing appears under two labels depending on where it is read.

A rename is easy for a reader and awkward for a dataset. Series that were keyed to the old name either stop or continue under a different key and joining them back together is a decision someone has to make rather than a fact the data carries.

This feed prices the asset itself, so the record runs through the rename without a seam in it.

What a network token answers to

POL is the staking and gas asset of its network. Its demand comes from participation rather than from a product's revenue, which puts it in a different category from a token that represents a claim on something.

That distinction matters when marking a position. Participation demand is steadier than speculative flow while being harder to read from price alone, so the depth behind a quote carries more of the signal than the quote itself.

The measured rate published here is taken from the venues where that participation is actually funded.

A compact book for a large network

A large ecosystem does not guarantee a deep on-chain book for its own token. Much of the trading in a network token happens away from the chain it belongs to, so the on-chain set stays compact while the network stays busy.

That is worth stating rather than hiding. A compact book is more sensitive to any single venue and a weighted reading is the honest way to handle it.

Who runs on this rate

Treasuries holding network tokens

A mark on a sub-dollar asset needs resolution below the cent, or the position is being measured in noise.

Teams mapping asset identifiers

One asset circulating under two names is a reconciliation problem before it is a pricing problem.

Risk desks with layer-two exposure

The token's own book behaves differently from the network's activity. This reads the former.
